Purple Hemp Flower: Why Are Some Strains Purple?

Have you ever wondered why some strains of cannabis are purple, while others are light green and many different other colors? The answer is because of pigments called “Anthocyanins.” Like leaves in the fall the strains that contain Anthocyanins will turn different shades of purple, blue, or sometimes dark red. Not all strains are genetically comprised of anthocyanins so you can’t force a plant to turn purple if it does not have the genetics to do so.

Berry Snowcone and Purple Emperor are two of our strains here at Topsail Hemp that are meant to have purple hues. What’s your favorite purple strain or purple hemp flower?
